New Work: Runner’s World Magazine
I recently did a quick shoot with Ellen Marshall, a marathon runner, for the May issue of Runner’s World magazine. It’s out in the shops now!

If you read Computer Arts magazine, you may have seen my portrait of fantastic papercut artist Julene Harrison. She’s produced work for the likes of O2, The Sunday Telegraph, Tiffany and Co and De Beers to name but a few. Check out her website – Made By Julene.

March 26th was a day of protest in London, with a quarter of a million people turning out to express their anger at the government’s plans to make extensive economic cuts. The main organised ‘March for the Alternative’ protest was billed as ‘family friendly’ and passed peacefully and successfully with a carnival atmosphere. However, with any protest of this size, there will always be groups and inviduals who wish to make their voices heard with more extreme forms of civil disobedience.
These protestors targetted businesses they thought were avoiding taxes; anti-capitalists and anarchists smashed windows and burned street furniture. But dispite all this disorder – all the shouting and all the goading – there seemed to be little outright aggression. Those genuinely looking for a fight with police were a very young, very antogonistic minority
The police were ready for them and I thought that, like hundreds of others, I’d take my camera along and have a look at these alternative protests. These are some of my photos.

The police made a huge impression on me today. The way they dealt with the public is a far cry from only a few years ago. Rather than attack the situation and enflame it, they carefully controlled it, letting it burn itself out. They were good humoured and polite (when one officer barged me with his riot shield he apologised profusely; when another noticed I’d left my lens cap on, he burst out laughing). They were forceful when they needed to be, effective when trouble flared up and very organised. The only policeman who wasn’t so good humored was, ironically, their photographer, who took offense when I tried to snap his picture. Funny that.
Quote of the day goes to one riot officer who complained to his colleague about his uniform: “My box is killing me.”
I was shooting the lovely Blioux Kirkby and Livia Fekiacova at a secret location in Greenwich, London. The guys from Allora Visuals joined me to shoot the action!
