New Work: Snow Day
The weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful. And since we’ve no place to go…

If you’re interested in improving your portraiture skills, then join me on the one-day course that I’ll be running, entitled
Whether you’ve got the most expensive Hasselblad or a little point-and-shoot, it doesn’t matter. This course won’t be looking at equipment, but instead will be aimed at developing your eye for composition, mood and atmosphere, as well as learning to manage and pose your models – whether they’re professionals or just your friends. There will be discussion about what makes a great portrait, explanation of some of the golden rules of portraiture (and why they were made to be broken) and then there will be a hands-on workshop where we’ll venture outside and put your own skills to the test.
Time permitting, we’ll then be doing a short session with Photoshop Elements, giving you a small taster of how you can add impact to your images without going overboard.
The course is being run in colaboration with The Photographer’s Workshop, and if you’re interested in booking, visit their site here!

If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise…
I was shooting up in Edinburgh last week, when I ran into my good friend Alan McNeil, the musical brains behind electronic music outfit Engine7, and we decided to do some pictures.
If you like trip hop, electronica or ambient music, you really should check out Engine7, and if you ever find yourself north of the border, you could do a lot worse than going to one of their live gigs.
Every year, the WISE/UKRC Women of Outstanding Achievement awards are presented to women who have lead in the fields of Science, Engineering and Technology. I was asked to create portraits of the four winners, Angela Brady, Fiona Marshall, Belinda Swain, and former Tomorrow’s World presenter, Maggie Philbin. As well as the two images below, more images were picked up by The Guardian newspaper, and can be viewed on their website here.

I’ve been named as a finalist in the category of Photographer of the Year in the Digital Magazine Awards 2012, for my work on The Maior Magazine
Wish me luck!

When Frank Sinatra sang that song, he wasn’t talking about broomsticks and cobwebs, and neither does freestyle witch, Francesca Hardy (aka Child of Bones). For her witchcraft is much more modern, and is less about standing over a bubbling cauldron than it is focusing on what makes you feel good. And when she approached me to take some photos for her, I thought it would be a great gig in the run up to Halloween, and also gave me the chance to do a shoot at a spot that I’d been eager to shoot at for as long as I could remember.
Take a look at Child of Bones’ website at www.childofbones.com, and why not read this interview she gave to Jarvis & Janis.

I asked one of my assistants, Nina Vachanelidou, to get in front of the lens for this shot. She made a great subject!

I don’t photograph bands often enough, so when These Miles invited me along to their rehearsal rooms, I jumped at the chance. And not only do they look good, but they sound pretty good too!

For many people, shopping is a past time. It’s why they go to work. But there’s an old anarchist chant… “bombs are dropping while you’re shopping”. While people are eyeing up the new shiny shiny, being kept busy with the pursuit of nice things, real life is happening somewhere else.
